Gloria Caranica Obituary

Gloria Caranica, born December 10, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island to Dimitrie Caranica and Thomaida Nastu Caranica, passed away on January 23, 2026.

Gloria moved with her family from Providence to Bridgeport, Connecticut and graduated from Bassick High School. In 1956, the family moved to 22 Judd Road in Monroe. Gloria attended the University of Connecticut, but soon transferred to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design during which she spent a semester studying art in Italy.

From 1959 to 1964, she was an industrial designer for Buxton Leather in Springfield, Massachusetts, where she designed women’s wallets and other leather accessories. She relocated to Cranbury, New Jersey and, from 1964 to 1968, was an industrial designer for Creative Playthings, an innovative children’s toy company focused on early childhood development. There, she designed the iconic Rocking Beauty, a midcentury modern minimalist take on a rocking horse, which later brought her recognition and acclaim. The Rocking Beauty is part of the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Modern Art, and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan. She also designed a modern slide, cradle, and stroller, among other children’s toys.

From 1968 to 1971, she worked at Universal Education Corporation as a design manager with a think-tank of behavioral psychologists and educators to create a wide variety of educational toys. Gloria then moved to Chicago from 1973 to 1975 to become the design manager for Playskool, where she focused on creating, developing and testing new infant and pre-school toys. She was then hired by Fisher-Price Toys and moved to the Buffalo area to become a senior manager of product design (1975 to 1984) where she supervised a staff of eight designers and technicians working on infant and pre-school toys and dolls. While working for Fisher Price, Gloria travelled extensively throughout Europe and China to solve manufacturing problems. She also worked with Jim Henson to obtain the rights for Fisher Price to design and manufacture the Muppets as plush toys.

In 1984, Gloria left Fischer Price to start her own consulting business with partner Bob Ostrander, CSI Design Consultants, where she provided her creative and technical services to Johnson & Johnson, Tyco, Kiddie Products and Gund, where she developed the new Baby Gund line. When she retired in 1996, she moved back to Monroe where she continued painting—her life-long passion. In 2022, she relocated to Novi, Michigan to be with her nephew Kristian Tanacea and his family.

During her lifetime, Gloria travelled extensively though Europe, Romania, Greece, China, Jerusalem, Canada, and more. She painted, sculpted and sewed. She maintained close ties to St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church. She was a cat lover, strong in her faith, and reveled in nature and art. She and Loretta were close, and she was simply “Teta” to Kendra and Kristian. She was full of life and adventure. The family vacationed together in London, New York City, Chicago, the Buffalo area, Toronto, Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, San Francisco and Sonoma.

Gloria is survived by her sister Loretta Caranica Tanacea, her niece Kendra Tanacea and her partner John Diehl, and her nephew Kristian Tanacea and his wife Heidi Tanacea and grandnieces Mia and Alyson Tanacea.

Funeral services will be held on February 6, 2026 at 10:30 am at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Road, Easton, followed by the burial at Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Dimitrie Orthodox Church. Arrangements are in the care of the Polke & Sons Funeral Home.
