Margaret Balogh Obituary

Margaret “Margie” (Kassay) Balogh, 95, died at Newtown Health and Rehabilitation Center, Newtown, CT., on February 21, 2024. She passed peacefully, without pain or fear, after spending the afternoon with family reminiscing over family photos and eating Tiramisu from a French Bakery.

Margaret was born on March 11, 1928 to Frank and Anna (Galdun) Kassay. She was the fifth of nine children in their family. The home where she was born was on Baros Street in Fairfield, CT. That building later became a shed for the family farm when Frank and Anna moved into a prefabricated Sears and Robuck house that was put up on the Black Rock Turnpike side of their property. The Sears and Robuck house was large enough to hold all of Frank and Anna’s eventual nine children, and, ultimately, their twenty-two grandchildren, as well. It became a gathering place for the family each Sunday for as long as Frank and Anna lived.

For Margie and her brothers and sisters, their childhood revolved around the adventures of nine children growing up on a farm; there were always kids, always chores, always games, and always plenty of healthy food to eat. Margie had happy memories of her childhood years in Fairfield where she attended local schools and was active in the Calvin United Church of Christ, which her family attended regularly in spite of the need to walk two miles to get there.

Margaret married Charles Balogh in 1948. She and Charlie had a double wedding with Margaret’s sister Helen and Pete Olah.

In 1954 Margie and Charles bought a house on 101 Nutmeg Lane in Fairfield. The house was selected for its quiet and beautiful location, its pleasant neighbors, and its nearness to family. During their marriage the happiest times on 101 Nutmeg Lane revolved around Margie’s excellent cooking and Charlie’s excellent singing and playing of the guitar.

Margie worked at a variety of jobs during her life, always finding work that she enjoyed doing, and that also fit the needs of her family.

In 1978 Charlie died at fifty-five years of age, and Margie became a widow at forty-nine. She remained strong and active by doing things with family, playing sports, working at the church, and helping others.

For almost nine years after Charlie died, Margie enjoyed the companionship of her brother-in-law, Joe Kovacs. The two played golf, skied, traveled and entertained together until Joe passed away in 1987.

One of the most important days of the year for Margie was the Kassay family reunion, when Kassay family members would travel from all over the country to gather together, eat their favorite foods, play games and celebrate their love for one another.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Kathy Magoun, her two step Grandsons, Dylan Magoun, Derrick Magoun, and his wife Kristen. Her Greatgrandchildren, Conner Magoun, Logan Magoun and Olivia Magoun. Her sister Helen Olah, sister-in-laws Marie Kassay, and May Kassay, and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles, five brothers, Louis, Frank, John, Zoly, and Stevie, two sisters, Betty and Barbara and her former Son in law, Hugh Magoun.

In lieu of flowers you could honor Margaret by donating to a cause that was close to her heart.

Margie always appreciated the help, protection, and kindness that was shown to her by the local police in Fairfield. Her gratitude for their presence was reinforced one night when Margie, still living alone in her eighties, got frightened and called 911. A Fairfield Police Officer came to her house, sat with her at her kitchen table, and talked with her until she felt better. Margie never forgot his kindness.

You could honor Margaret by donating to a Police Department of your choice.

Margie had a deep compassion for all living things and never wanted to see any living thing suffer. You could honor her by donating to an animal protection organization of your choice. Some possibilities include:

The Out to Pasture Farm and Rescue, in Newington, CT.

The Connecticut Humane Society

The World Wild Life Fund

Finally, being a child from a family of eleven people living on a farm, Margie understood that without Mother Earth we would have nothing. You could honor her by donating to an organization that protects our Earth. Some possibilities include:

Nature Conservancy – Their mission being to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.

Ocean Conservancy – Their mission being to protect the ocean from today’s greatest global challenges.
